Money in Venezuela: understand the rate before you pay
The bolívar is Venezuela’s currency. You will see amounts written as Bs and the currency code VES. A dollar price, an official exchange rate and a USDT quote describe different things.
Three terms to know
- Bolívares · VES · Bs
- The currency used for prices and payments in bolívares. Check which currency a price is expressed in.
- BCV exchange rate
- The official reference published by the Central Bank of Venezuela. BCV Hoy distinguishes the rate effective today from a rate already published for a later date.
- USDT · P2P
- A market reference for a digital token. It is not a cash dollar quote or a guaranteed rate from your bank or an exchange provider.
Convert a dollar price into bolívares
Multiply the dollar amount by the agreed VES per USD rate. To reverse the calculation, divide the bolívar amount by that rate.

Before paying or exchanging money
- Ask for the final amount, currency, exchange rate and any fee before confirming.
- Check card acceptance and fees with your bank and the merchant; acceptance can vary.
- Ask what identification and payment methods an exchange provider requires. Verify the provider through official sources.
- Compare the amount you will actually receive, rather than the headline rate alone.
